Nasarawa To Revisit Minimum Wage Implementation

The Nassarawa State government has indicated its readiness to review the N18,900 minimum wage implementation with a view to correcting some of the anomalies inherent in it.

The special adviser to Governor Umaru Tanko Almakura on command centre, Mr. Hamza Elayo, gave the indication on Tuesday in a parley with journalists.

He noted that while directors on grade level 16 collect over N240, 000 as monthly salary, their counterparts in other states collect far less.

Elayo also described the strike action by labour unions as ‘‘inconsiderate, unrealistic and unpatriotic’’ noting that the state government was still committed to the welfare of its workers.

He also condemned the use of coercion by the organized labour to ensure compliance in the strike action even when sections of workers in the state expressed reservation towards joining the strike accusing the leaders of double standards and insensitivity.

The adviser maintained that labour’s decision to embark on strike on mere rumours that government was planning to pay incomplete salary due to revenue shortfall was appaling and mischievous.

Speaking in the same vein, the head of civil service in the state, Mr. Joseph Ancho, said government has concluded arrangements for the implementation of salary arrears of promotion urged labour unions to take advantage of government’s disposition to dialogue and negotiations so that workers can return to work.

He said internal dispute resolution mechanisms were not exhausted before labour declared strike, maintaining that all oustauding issues of promotion from 2011 were being addressed.
