UK foreign affairs minister visits Nigeria today
The United Kingdom’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Baroness Anelay, is visiting Nigeria today to hold high level discussions with government officials on how to better ensure the protection of civilians in the fight against Boko Haram insurgents.
A statement by British High Commission in Abuja said Anelay, who is also the UK Prime Minister’s Special Representative for Preventing Sexual Violence in Conflict (PSVI), would also meet with a range of civil society activists and Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) to discuss the importance of preventing sexual violence during conflict. According to the statement, the minister would also have discussion on additional humanitarian support that the UK was providing for the victims of the Boko Haram insurgency.
This includes £6.7 million to enable the Federal Government, NGOs, UN agencies and the Red Cross, to deliver food assistance, education, sanitation and safe water, shelter material and other basic necessities.
The minister, it added, would also meet with the BringBackOurGirls Campaign as well as visit a number of UK sponsored projects in Nigeria.
